Do the Thing

Yes, that thing.

I don’t know how many of you know this, but I’m a fake redhead. I’ve wanted red hair for as long as I can remember as my grandma had it when she was younger and it was beautiful. I would occasionally get some natural auburn highlights in the summer, but for the most part, my hair always stayed its boring old brown.

About a week before my birthday this past year, I thought a nice birthday present to myself would be to add some red to my hair. It was sort of spontaneous and I didn’t tell anyone, making it extra exciting. A couple months later when I went to get the highlights touched up, my new stylist said I’d pull off all-over red really well. I told her to go for it and my hair has been steadily becoming brighter since.

It occurred to me the other day that while I’ve wanted red hair for such a long time in my life yet I was afraid to make the leap on something so small. That little change made me a bit happier every time I saw what my hair looked like. I somehow felt more like me than I had before. And all it took was a small change.

Moving forward can be scary sometimes. Whether the decision is big or small, moving out of the pattern you’re used to can be incredibly overwhelming. Well I’m here to be the voice inside your head, encouraging you to take that step, telling you to make that change.

A big reason we stay in the routines we’ve always held is because we’re afraid to try something new. As much as I’ve tried to make excuses for the reasons I won’t take a leap in a few areas of my life, it’s all rooted in fear of the unknown. Why are we so afraid of things we can’t predict or put into a box?

Intern Me

Life is full of beautiful things that you’ll never see if you don’t take the chance to experience them. Is it easier to do the same thing from the same place every day? Sure. That’s even some people’s favorite way to live. Once you feel that itch for something more or that flame asking for something new, it can be unbelievably draining.

So take that job you’ve always wanted. Tell someone you love them. Move to a new city. Chop your hair off. Take that trip you’ve always wanted to take. Don’t box yourself in out of fear. If you’re looking for a sign to do that thing, this is it.

So go do it. I’ve made it this far without quoting the Shia LaBeouf video, so I’ll end with this: “Don’t let your dreams be dreams.”

  1. Hi,
Well, everytime I have told someone that I love them, I have got rejected… Sometimes in a bad way, sometimes respectfully… But rejection is all I have got… And it’s been happening since last 5 years.
